Session 2: Inclusivity & Diversity
The fashion industry likes to think it is inclusive but the reality is Vogue hired a black photographer for their cover shoot for the first time only in 2018. 2020 highlighted the importance of social justice and the deep systemic racism that is prevalent in all systems, including fashion. In this session, speakers Adelle Renaud of Peau de Loup and Kate Pierre of Kate & Frances will review the past year from an equity and diversity lens, sharing stories of inclusivity in design, marketing and business.

Adelle Renaud
Adelle is an accomplished entrepreneur, fashion and graphic designer. With more than 15 years of experience in the industry she spent the first part of her career working as a designer and then crossed over into the manufacturing world with a focus on ethical practices and sustainability until finally in 2012 Adelle made the leap into entrepreunership they were awarded Top 30 under 30 in 2015 for the work they did as the founder of one of the first ever non-binary clothing brands. They have since focused their talents on the strategic aspect of the business as a creative leader focusing efforts on building brands, with emphasis on diversity, strong sustainable sourcing and unique product development strategies.

Kate Pierre
With a fascination for identity, self-expression and the psychology behind the clothing that we wear, Kate studied fashion and design in her home country of New Zealand and now calls Vancouver home for the past 7 years.
Kate Pierre is the owner and designer of the apparel brand KATE&FRANCES, with a focus on zero waste and representation, while creating comfortable and functional apparel for all. The brand steps away from conventional silhouettes to create a unique and playful style in which to express yourself.
Kate is also a writer, where she explores topics pertaining to the fashion industry and her latest project, word?! Where she chats with Black and Brown creatives within BC. You can read her work here and also on her lifestyle blog katepierre.com
When she’s not designing or writing, Kate teaches subjects related to fashion design part time, where she creates a space for students to express their true selves and to be curious about the fashion industry.
